Kumi Designs is a brand dedicated to creating unique and timeless works that successfully convey stories to their intended audience. I am a Ghanaian-American designer who learned how to design on my phone before being formally taught how to use industry-standard tools. I believe this gave me an innate understanding of not only how to design for mobile devices, but of how access, or lack thereof, can act as a means of more creativity. Even now in my practice, I see all design platforms as collaborators that work in tandem. I refuse to limit myself to just one and understand that the design process may involve multiple. As a result of this and my identity, my brand values include diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and persistence. The brand values of Kumi Designs: I believe in championing accessible design, persevering through creative challenges, and the importance of storytelling through a multicultural lens.

My graphic mark pulls from Adinkra symbols, which are symbols that represent different concepts. They originated in Ghana and are commonly used in fabric, art, jewelry, and so on. I want to incorporate these symbols and my last name “Kumi” into my brand identity to pay homage to my culture and family.
